Are all of the following symptoms of the same problem? [Windows 7, Virus, permissions errors]
After my computer was infected with a virus, it has been giving me the following errors: Windows Search (Start Menu) doesn't bring up suggestions as I type. Windows Search gives an error: (Windows cannot access specified path) Microsoft Outlook won't open Outlook.pst. (Error: File Access Denied, don't have the required permission) Sticky Notes won't run (Not able to launch, issue with accessing the file) from taskbar or system32 folder unless I run it as Administrator Mozilla Products (Firefox and Thunderbird) will not open, and give the error that they're already running. Another problem that developed was the system would crash when I logged in, but I was able to boot in Safe Mode and disable Symantec Endpoint Protection 12. I can now boot in normal mode. I want to uninstall Symantec, but Windows Installer can't access the required log file. Are all of these being cause by one changed setting by that virus? Or has it been many changes? Is there a way to determine which changes were made? Using System Restore to return to a point before these problems started occurring did not help. Background: None of these problems occurred before I did the following: Linked my computer with my XBOX 360 using Windows Media Center (I opened all of the recommended ports to enable the connection) Connected a new Toshiba 1 TB external hard drive Cleared and re-mapped, then disabled the virtual CD Drive on a WD Smartware 1 TB external hard drive Got a Virus (Detected and taken care of by Malwarebytes Anti Malware) I'm using a Toshiba Satellite laptop, running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Hi, I am Chetan Savade from Symantec Technical Support team. There is a tool by name 'Cleanwipe' to remove SEP if you are facing any challenge through normal add/remove programs. Check this article to know more about it https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/new-cleanwipe-version-introuduced-sep-121-ru2 However it's not recommended to disable SEP or uninstall SEP if system is infected. You can use Symantec power eraser to scan the infected system. Use Power Eraser to detect threat and remove them http://www.symantec.com/theme.jsp?themeid=spe-user-guide If SEP and power eraser couldn't find anything then run the SST & submit suspicious files to the Symantec for further analysis. https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/using-symantec-support-tool-how-do-we-collect-suspicious-files-and-submit-same-symantec-secb Best Regards, Chetan Savade
